How the Baby Boomers Ruined Everything

About

I’m a freelance journalist and writer based in Brooklyn, NY.  The coming generational war between the Baby Boomers and their offspring is rife which dramatic potential: each generation is a fascinating study in what the American political, cultural, and social system does right and wrong.  I’ve long had an interest in the Baby Boomer generation, and here I’ll analyze them specifically in terms of what they have done to the country today.

There will be propaganda and finger pointing here (we’ve got to draw readers!), but I’m also going to try to include counterpoints and even handed analysis.   See the “theory” tag for especially thought out posts that will begin to shape an understanding of where the Boomers have come from, what they have done, and what we can do.

I’d love to hear from you: itstheirfault@gmail.com.

A letter to Andrew Sullivan that pretty much sums up what we’ll be discussing on this site.

[The Boomers] were the generation that got their wish in the 1960s with John F. Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy. Who saw the promise of a new politics embodied in both men, and had the electoral power through sheer demographics to propel them to what would have been successful presidencies.

The promise was cut short, but that generation of baby boomers lived on as the definitive political and economic force in American politics. In the late 60s and early 70s they expressed their social power through a burgeoning cultural and political revolution. As the 70s became the 80s they began to grow into their prime earning potential, demanding tax cuts and beginning a spending spree that would fuel almost all of the economic growth of the 1990s. They were narcissistic and short-sighted; all too willing to view an ascendant, powerful America as their personal reward for being born at the right time and place.

Looking forward to reading your blog and thoughts. I am a “boomer” (or is it Joneser) born in 1958. Oh boy, do my fellow boomers drive me crazy. First, when the last boomer dies, please turn off the frickin’ Beatles. Second, thanks alot for the drug culture, which has spawned a global organized crime wave that will last 100 years and claim 100 million lives before it ends. Third, thanks for the free love. We all know how that turned out. And lastly, please don’t take credit for civil rights and feminism. That was your older brother and sister.
